Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng Meets UFI President and RX Global CEO, Hugh Jones
(April 9th, 2025) Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng met with Hugh Jones, President of the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) and Global CEO of RX, along with his delegation. The two sides engaged in in-depth discussions on strengthening cooperation in the exhibition industry, advancing Shanghai's ambition to become a globally influential international exhibition hub, supporting the city's industrial transformation, and creating new consumption scenarios.
Driving Global High-End Resources Towards Key Industries to Support Shanghai’s Transformation
Mayor Gong emphasized that Shanghai is accelerating its development into a globally influential modern international metropolis, with the “Five Centers” initiative being the focal point and key mission. He noted that the integration of technology and industrial innovation in the exhibition industry plays a vital role in promoting face-to-face communication and supporting the construction of the “Five Centers.”
“Shanghai’s exhibition industry has long been at the forefront, acting as a key gateway to the world. As the external environment becomes more complex and uncertain, international cooperation is more crucial than ever. We look forward to RX helping to channel global high-end resources towards key industries, driving Shanghai’s industrial transformation, and linking exhibitions with major events such as the ‘First in Shanghai’ and the ‘Five-Five Shopping Festival,’ creating new consumption scenarios and enhancing the quality of Shanghai’s consumer market,” Mayor Gong said.
He further emphasized that Shanghai would continue to create a market-driven, law-based, and internationalized business environment, encouraging enterprises to confidently invest, grow, and expand in the city.

Hugh Jones's Remarks on RX's Vision for Collaboration
Mr. Hugh Jones expressed high appreciation for the Shanghai Municipal Government’s support for the exhibition industry. He said, “Shanghai is viewed very highly in the world of exhibitions. As we look ahead at launching new exhibitions in particular industries of future, Shanghai will be regarded as the natural hosting city. As UFI President, I am eager to deepen our cooperation with Shanghai, uncover business opportunities, and create more safe, efficient and fun exhibitions in the city, providing an opportunity to see the whole word in one city to enjoy multicultural interaction and to act both as business person and as a member of the world economy. “
Hugh Jones also introduced two major international events organized by RX at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC) and the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) on the same day in Shanghai– the 91st China International Medical Equipment Fair (CMEF) and the World Packaging Industry Expo (WEPACK). During the show period, hundreds of thousands of professionals from around the world explore cutting-edge innovations in medical equipment on one side of Shanghai, while see the newest packaging and printing solutions on the other side of Shanghai, underscoring Shanghai’s global influence.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Cooperation
Looking to the future, both Mayor Gong and Hugh Jones agreed on the importance of deepening their cooperation. They outlined plans to further elevate Shanghai’s position as China’s core exhibition city, aligning exhibitions and high-caliber conferences with the needs of Shanghai’s industrial development, and continuing to enhance the exhibition economy’s impact on the city’s prosperity.
